Graduate Storeys: charity dinners, careers fairs and climbing Mount Snowdon

It’s been a busy couple of months for our Graduates. Here’s what Cleo and Holly have been up to:

Cleo Cragg

The best part about BaxterStorey’s Graduate Programme is the flexibility you have to visit a variety of sites across the business, from fashion brands and law firms to football clubs and banks. I have spent the last few months at Braithwaites, a restaurant at a London-based law firm but I’ve also had the opportunity to work at The Social Bee, Eleven and St Botolphs. Getting to work at multiple locations amongst different teams has taught me so much, from the importance of people management and client relationships, to the ins and outs of managing an account.

This month I’ve got stuck in to health and safety, preparing a site for an upcoming ESB audit. This involved making sure personal training files were up to date, team training and working alongside the head chef to complete all food safety paperwork. Exec chef German Grunow has taught me all I need to know; he really is the expert when it comes to health and safety in the kitchen!

Kate (another Grad) and I went back to university last week, to attend Oxford Brookes careers fair to talk to students about our experience on the programme so far. It felt strange returning to uni, so much has happened since we graduated! It was funny to think that only six months ago I was in their shoes speaking to potential employers about my future career.

At the beginning of the programme, we were tasked with creating an event proposal for 100 people which had to include menu costings, suppliers, uniform, staffing etc. My event was ‘Mocktoberfest’, a modern take on the traditional Oktoberfest. Planning this event from start to finish allowed me to put what I’ve learnt so far into practice, and identify any areas that I still need to work on.

Looking back over the last seven months, it’s been an amazing journey and I feel so lucky to have made not only great industry connections but friends for life. A special thank you to Molly Mahoney, Dan Stewart and Lynne Waldock who have been so supportive throughout.

 

Holly Wynn

It’s been a busy few weeks in the South region, packed full of mobilisations! I’m currently working on my second mobilisation, Pinewood and Shepperton Studios and I’m loving every minute. You see so much of the business during a mobilisation, from menu writing and costing, to liaising with suppliers to establish the retail offer. The site has loads of outlets, including coffee shops, a bar and a cinema! I’ve been working alongside project manager Amanda Carrington to ensure tariffs are in place, to create Food EQ-inspired marketing and organising uniform for the team.

During my first mobilisation, I was lucky enough to work closely with the location manager, Kate Spencer, who’s taught me so much, particularly in areas I felt I needed more practice in. I now feel more confident in closing the books each week, phoning suppliers to place orders and posting job adverts on our recruitment portal.

Alongside mobilisations, I was given the opportunity to attend the ACE charity dinner at Langham Hotel, along with a few other Grads. It was an amazing networking opportunity; I met so many hospitality professionals, and the dinner was incredible! The dinner was to help raise awareness and donations for Hospitality Action, the chosen charity for our Graduate Programme project. On the 19th May, we’re going to be hiking up Mount Snowdon, helping raise funds to support this amazing charity. We’re going to be filming it as we go (brave I know!) so watch this space…
