Meet Amy Miller, Class of 2018 BaxterStorey Graduate

If you enjoy a challenge, thrive in a fast-paced environment but most of all enjoy making customers smile, why not join our family? We caught up with our 2018 Scotland-based graduate, Amy Miller.

Did you always want to work in hospitality?

Hospitality is an industry I’ve always worked in. I trained as a chef at college for four years and then went on to complete my Hospitality Management degree at Edinburgh Napier in partnership with City of Glasgow College.

What do you enjoy most about the hospitality industry?

I love the busyness of it and the buzz. Every day is different; I don’t think working in an office environment from nine to five is for me.

How did you hear of the Graduate Programme?

Through an industry talk. Allison Miller and a few of the chefs came to my college to talk about BaxterStorey and the career opportunities available. It was a real eye-opener, I didn’t fully understand what contract catering was before. I applied for the BaxterStorey Graduate Programme in 2016 but was unfortunately unsuccessful.

Determined not to be disheartened I applied for some work experience at two BaxterStorey locations, RBS Gogarburn and City of Glasgow College. Working here gave me first-hand experience working in the kitchen, front of house and fine dining. I was still really keen to get some management experience under my belt, so I applied for the graduate programme the following year in 2017 and was accepted. I was absolutely delighted!

What was your favourite part of the Graduate Programme?

There were so many highlights. I loved visiting our different locations in Scotland and seeing the wide variety of clients we have. The environmental health and safety audit was a great experience, I got the opportunity to shadow an auditor during an ESB audit at one of our locations.

It made me appreciate the importance of working together as a team to create a safer environment for our customers, to ensure we were all playing our part. Our customers are at the forefront of what we do, so it’s critical we look after them.

What training courses did you complete on the Graduate Programme?

So many! Managing health and safety, food safety, finance, allergens, barista training, essentials of HR… the list goes on. The nutrition training was informative, allowing me to help our customers lead healthier lives, providing them with the right nutritional information and a balanced choice.

Tell us about your current role with us.

I am currently location manager at Student Loans Company in Scotland, looking after two small units with over 1700 customers. I manage a small team of two people, but it’s been a great learning curve working in a large site to such a small one. It was different at first, but I love it. As location manager I have a say in the weekly menus, the retail offer, the uniform, the marketing etc. My operations manager Scott Nolans has been an incredible support and is there to help answer any concerns I may have.

What gives you the most satisfaction in the workplace?

Seeing my customers happy and receiving positive feedback.

What would you say to any graduates thinking of applying?

If you’ve got a real passion for hospitality, a love for great customer service and fresh food, then apply today! I wanted to work for a company that encourages training and career development, and BaxterStorey has given me so many opportunities. The support from my mentor Sharon was brilliant; she was only ever a phone call away.
