We’re raising a toast to two rising stars from Oxford Saïd Business School – Pastry Chef Asia Michelis and Commis Chef Edith Protherough – who recently wowed judges at two of Oxford’s biggest foodie competitions.

Asia was crowned OxFood Hero of the Year 2025 after competing against some of the most talented chefs in the Guild of Chefs competition. Given the challenge to make potato the star of the show, Asia delivered a masterclass in flavour, technique and innovation. Turning savoury into sweet, she presented a showstopping potato and chocolate mousse, paired with potato ice cream, potato beignets and topped off with passion fruit. Asia said: “I’m always looking to push boundaries while staying true to who I am as a pastry chef. My goal was to be different – to create something the judges had never tasted before. With any dish it’s always about creating balance, textures and flavours that work harmonise together.”

Proud of Asia’s achievements, mentor and Executive Chef Steven Wren said: “Asia is a powerhouse. Her attention to detail, creative flair and pursuit of perfection make her stand out in every way. A very well-deserved win.”

Meanwhile, Edith – a trailblazer from our Chef Academy Level Two cohort – went head-to-head at Oxford’s Junior Chef of the Year – a fast-paced, high-pressure competition where chefs had just three hours to plate 40 canapés across four categories – meat, fish, vegetarian and plant-based.

Edith’s menu packed a punch, showing technique and clever flavour pairings – from a creamy leek and asparagus velouté to a bold twist on Barkham Blue mousse – all crafted with a strong focus on seasonal ingredients and sustainability.

The competition spotlighted chefs with less than four years in the industry. “To see someone so early in their journey show this level of commitment is incredible. She has a fantastic future ahead,” said Steven. He added: “From creating her menu, to planning, organising and practising thoroughly, she got stuck in every aspect of the challenge!”

We’re proud to have such talent in our kitchen – congratulations, Asia and Edith!
